One of the advantages I see with the vmware acquiring spring source is the hyperic. Hyperic already have a wide range of Application management and monitoring tools across all platforms and application servers. As per their website, Hyperic can manage/monitor applications in the cloud environment.
SpringSource has the right tools for the Java/J2ee Application development , IDE tools , Application server as Tomcat, this provides a light weight easy-to-develop applications.
This might also improve the Virtual Appliance Market for the Vmware, they can bundle java apps to a VM.
